How to choose an immersion blender

The immersion blender is a compact kitchen appliance that almost no housewife can do without. It helps prepare purees and cream soups, sauces and cocktails, and grinds fruits and herbs. Some of the most “advanced” models are even able to chop ice to cool drinks and cut vegetables into cubes for salads.

Device and features of submersible blenders

The submersible blender consists of a small handle housing with an electric motor built inside. A long nozzle is attached to the handle, at the end of which there is a sharp knife with two blades, covered with a protective cap. When turned on, it begins to rotate, chopping and mixing food, and the cap directs the contents to the knife and avoids splashing food.

During operation, this blender, as it is clear from its name, should be immersed in a container with products. This can be any pot, a Cup with high sides, a large glass.

The configuration of the device depends on the model. Some blenders are equipped with only a single main attachment, while others are sold with egg beaters and dough Kneaders, measuring cups, shredders, and other accessories.

One of the key characteristics of an immersion blender is its maximum power. For different devices, it can range from 150 W to 1400 W. This parameter directly affects the capabilities of the device. Models with a power of up to 350 watts are suitable for mixing cocktails, making mashed potatoes from boiled vegetables and soft fruits like bananas.

If you need to chop raw vegetables and cut meat, it is better to choose a device with a power of at least 350-500 watts. The blender, which has this characteristic varies from 500 to 1000 watts, will also be able to chop ice, grind nuts, and easily cope with frozen foods. The most powerful models (more than 1000 W) are suitable for those who are fond of a variety of pastries: with a special nozzle, they are well kneaded even thick dough.

Speeds and modes

Another important point to pay attention to is the number of speeds in the blender. For different models, the number varies from 1 to 25. By changing the speed of rotation of the knife, you can avoid splashing liquids and get a dish of the desired consistency: with large, small pieces or completely homogeneous.

The method of switching speeds can be stepped (for each mode there is a separate position) or smooth. The latter option is more convenient because it allows you to choose the optimal speed more precisely.

Sometimes a rotary wheel is used for smooth adjustment, and sometimes a button: the harder you press it, the faster the knife rotates in the nozzle. This design is considered by many to be unsuccessful, since the intense pressure on the key (if high speed is needed for grinding products) quickly tires the fingers.

Many devices have a turbo mode: when this function is selected, the blender immediately switches to the maximum speed. It is usually used at the final stage of working with products: to give them the most uniform and airy texture. There is a separate button on the blender to start the turbo mode.

Some models have a pulse mode. In this case, the blender running at high speed is periodically turned off for a short time. This option, firstly, allows you to evaluate the consistency of products, and secondly, allows you to avoid overheating of the device. Usually they work with the hardest products in the pulse mode, for example, they choose it for splitting ice or grinding nuts.

Both metal and plastic can serve as the material for making the submerged part of the blender.

The metal nozzle is reliable and durable: its service life is almost unlimited. But the plastic accessory is less resistant to loads. For example, it may break while chopping frozen vegetables or chopping ice. If you plan to use the blender for such purposes, when choosing pay attention not only to its power, but also to the material of the submerged part – it must be metal.

The bits of plastic, there are other disadvantages. First, they are colored (for example, after chopping beets, pumpkins, and other bright vegetables and berries) and absorb odors. Secondly, over time, microscopic cracks appear in the plastic, where food residues will accumulate. Finally, plastic submersible parts are not suitable for handling hot products and liquids.

The material of the blender body can also be plastic or metal. Unlike the submerged part, the case does not experience serious loads, so many consider the plastic model more convenient: it weighs less and does not let your hands get tired, which is especially important for long work.

In addition, the plastic case is easy to care for: any dirt on its surface can be removed with a damp cloth. But the stainless steel case is unlikely to look neat. Most likely, it will quickly be covered with drips from the drops that fly out during grinding, as well as finger marks – especially if they are not very dry and clean after contact with products.

Some blenders have rubberized pads on the body. This is a convenient option: this device is securely held and does not slip out even from a wet palm.

The possibilities of blenders directly depend on their configuration. For example, many models have a whisk for whipping. It is useful for making cocktails, sauces, creams, kneading batter, and will also replace the mixer if you need to whip cream or eggs into a fluffy foam. In addition to the whisk, powerful models can be attached to a spiral nozzle for thick dough.

Often, a chopper is included in the kit with an immersion blender. It is a small (about 600 ml) and completely closed bowl with a removable knife located in the middle. It is convenient to chop meat for minced meat and cut fresh herbs, prepare small portions of pates, sauces, purees for babies.

The knife used in the chopper can be straight or have slightly curved blades. Curved knives cut products more evenly and allow you to achieve a more uniform consistency.

It is convenient if a measuring Cup is provided for the blender. It is a transparent container with a scale on the wall that allows you to measure the desired amount of a liquid or bulk product. In certain cases (if you are preparing a sauce, cocktail or dough), this glass replaces the kitchen scale and helps you quickly mix the dish in the right proportion.

Sometimes a combine attachment is included in the package. It is made in the form of a bowl with a volume of 1-1. 5 liters and looks like a chopper. You can insert various accessories into this container, such as a vegetable grater or a disk for slicing. Some blenders even make dicing: this function allows you to prepare a salad or a soup preparation in a minimum time – however, it significantly increases the cost of equipment.

There are also blenders with a small nozzle-mill. It is designed for grinding coffee beans, peppers, and other spices and seasonings.

Type of food

For operation, most blenders are connected to the power supply, so when choosing it, you should pay attention to the length of the power cord. It is desirable that it should be at least 1 meter – otherwise you will always have to look for a place in the kitchen at the outlet.

Optional, but a nice addition to the functionality will be a compartment for storing the cable and a mount for hanging the device on the wall.

Some manufacturers produce wireless models that run on battery power. Unfortunately, this convenient function directly affects the power: usually these devices do not exceed 500-600 watts. The battery life is also small: as a rule, the device can be used for no more than 20-30 minutes, and then it will have to be put on charge for several hours.
